Talk to Your Doc: Local Physicians to Host Free Public Seminars

Monday, April 15th, 2013

ZANESVILLE – A pair of local doctors will discuss arthritis, heat exhaustion and revised concussion guidelines for high school athletes at two free seminars in Zanesville this month.

Dr. Steven H. Kimberly of Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville will discuss arthritis at 6 p.m. Monday, April 22 on the second floor of the Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville / Sports Medicine Zanesville facility at 2854 Bell Street.

Dr. James Gasparine of Sports Medicine Zanesville, will speak at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 24 on heat exhaustion and the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s new regulations designed to protect young athletes from head injuries. His presentation will also be held on the second floor at 2854 Bell Street.

“Pain as a result of arthritis is one of our most common medical problems,” said Dr. Kimberly, noting that nearly 46 million Americans have arthritis. Dr. Kimberly, an orthopaedic surgeon with Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville since 1995 added: “People tend to have a lot of questions about the disease and its causes and treatments. I want to help answer those questions.”

With warmer weather around the corner and the new concussion standards becoming effective April 26, Dr. Gasparine’s seminar will educate Zanesville residents about how to recognize and prevent two common conditions associated with sports and summer.

“We want to make sure parents, coaches and the community as a whole understand and recognize the signs of concussions and follow the proper protocols,” Dr. Gasparine said. “Heat exhaustion is also an important issue as summer approaches and we want to encourage anyone with questions to attend.”

Residents interested in taking part in either discussion are encouraged to reserve their spot by emailing sports@orthozane.com or by calling 740-588-1089.

Dr. Saunders Receives Innovation Award

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Congratulations to our very own Dr. Karl Saunders. The president of Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville received the Genesis P.R.I.D.E. award for “Innovation/Inspiration” this week. As a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Saunders has more than 30 years of experience, but continues to live on the cutting-edge of the industry. He brought the anterior approach to total hip replacement to Zanesville, allowing patients to have fewer limitations in mobility. This technique decreases patients’ pain and rehabilitation time, while lowering the possibility for complications and the need for narcotics.

Dr. Saunders represents innovation through his commitment to high-quality orthopaedic surgery care, representing the Genesis HealthCare System mission: to provide comprehensive, compassionate health care. Dr. Saunders often participates in educational events for members of the community and takes the time to thoroughly answer questions expressed by referring physicians, patients and their family members.

Dr. Saunders was also instrumental in the planning stages of EPIC, developing its orthopaedic orders and protocols as an enthusiastic leader. He continues to look for ways to improve the process and bring the highest quality of care to orthopaedic patients. Congratulations to Dr. Saunders on this prestigious honor!

Now We’re Cooking: OAZ St. Patrick’s Day Recipes

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

With St. Patrick’s Day this weekend, OAZ is offering insight on this international holiday. Although it is commonly known as the “feast day” of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, you don’t have to be Irish to celebrate this Saturday. You also don’t have to overindulge. Below are a few easy ways to have your own healthy holiday feast, compliments of our OAZ staff.

Here is one of our favorites borrowed from Cooking Light:

Corned Beef and Cabbage

Ingredients

  • 1 (4-pound) cured corned beef brisket, trimmed
  • 16 cups water
  • 2 cups chopped onion
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup chopped carrot
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pickling spice
  • 3 garlic cloves, peeled
  • Cooking spray
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
  • 1 (2 1/2-pound) head green cabbage, cored and cut into 1-inch strips
  • 4 pounds small red potatoes, quartered
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup dry breadcrumbs
  • 1 (5-ounce) jar prepared horseradish, drained and squeezed dry
  • 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard

Preparation

First, place the brisket in a large stockpot; add water, onions, celery, carrots, pickling spice and garlic. Bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 3 hours. Remove brisket from pot.

Next, place brisket on the rack of a broiler pan or roasting pan coated with cooking spray; place rack in pan. Strain cooking liquid through a colander into 2 large bowls; discard solids. Return liquid to pot. Add caraway seeds and cabbage; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 20 minutes. Drain.

While cabbage is cooking, place potatoes in a large Dutch oven. Cover with water. Bring to a boil; cook 20 minutes or until tender. Drain. Return potatoes to pan. Stir in parsley, butter, rind, juice, and pepper; toss to coat.

Next, preheat the broiler. Combine bread crumbs and horseradish. Spread mustard over one side of brisket. Press breadcrumb mixture onto mustard. Broil 3 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve brisket with cabbage and potatoes and enjoy!

Whole Wheat Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients

•    2 cups unsifted whole-wheat flour

•    2 cups unsifted all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting

•    1 teaspoon baking soda

•    1 teaspoon salt

•    2 1/4 cups light buttermilk

Preparation

Begin by preheating your oven to 450 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with pam and dust with flower. In a large mixing bowl, combine flower, baking soda and salt. Whisk together. Make a well in the middle. Pour in about 2/3 cup of the buttermilk. With one hand, stir it into the dough in a circular motion. Add another 2/3 cup of the buttermilk. Stir again with your hand, until flour is incorporated. Repeat until buttermilk is gone and you have a big lump of dough, which should be soft, but not too sticky.

Turn dough onto your floured surface. Clean your hands, dry them thoroughly, and dust them with flour. Lightly knead dough a few times until it’s a rounded loaf-like shape. Pat it down into a round, 2″-thick disc. Transfer to baking sheet. With a serrated knife, cut a deep X across the bread. Prick each area a few times with the knife.

Bake 20 minutes on 450°F. Drop the heat to 400°F and bake an additional 30 to 35 minutes. Bread should appear finished and sound hollow when you knock on it. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack until you’re ready to dig in.

Here are some more healthy recipes from Eating Well.

We will leave you with some holiday knowledge: While you will likely wear green this weekend, the Irish have actually long considered the color unlucky. Getting to Know Dr. James Gasparine

Monday, January 16th, 2012

Dr. James Gasparine has been a fan of sports his entire life. Maybe that’s why, in his sports medicine practice, he most enjoys working with athletes and getting them back to action as soon as possible.

His expertise ranges in a variety of sports-related injuries from strains to fractures, to expertise in concussion management and osteoporosis. The most common injuries Dr. Gasparine deals with are muscle strains, fractures, concussions and osteoarthritis flare-ups.

Dr. Gasparine believes the three biggest advancements in sports medicine are the management of concussions, diagnostic ultrasounds and osteoporosis. The most rewarding part of his job is seeing his patient get back to playing the sports they love.

Outside of Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville, Dr. Gasparine enjoys weightlifting, the outdoors and playing the piano.

His favorite industry-related website is the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

During Dr. Gasparine’s fellowship at West Virginia University, he concentrated on nutrition and weight loss, focusing on proper diet and supplemental intake with athletes and working with wrestlers to achieve proper weight in a safe way.
